The GX 550 rides on the GA-F body-on-frame platform — the same architecture behind the LX. A double-wishbone front suspension is paired with a multi-link rear, and full-time 4WD with a Torsen® locking center differential comes standard on every trim level.
Overtrail trims add the hardware that earns the badge: a locking rear differential, Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) that decouples the stabilizer bars when terrain demands articulation, Crawl Control for hands-off low-speed descents, and Multi-Terrain Select with modes for Sand, Mud, Dirt, Rock, and Deep Snow.

The Overtrail trims are engineered for off-road capability — they add 33-inch all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, Crawl Control, E-KDSS stabilizer-bar decoupling, and a one-inch suspension lift, but step down to five-seat (two-row) configurations. The Luxury and Luxury+ trims keep three rows of seating with up to seven passengers, semi-aniline leather, and an available 21-speaker Mark Levinson® audio system.
The GX 550 Overtrail tows up to 9,096 lb when equipped with the standard tow hitch receiver. Premium, Premium+, and Overtrail+ are all rated up to 9,063 lb; Luxury up to 8,020 lb; and Luxury+ up to 7,800 lb.2
Tow capacity depends on curb weight and seating configuration, not on the engine. Every GX 550 uses the same 3.4L twin-turbo V6 and standard tow hitch receiver. Overtrail and Overtrail+ are five-seat-only and the lightest in the lineup, so they tow the most. Premium and Premium+ can be configured as five- or seven-seaters, which puts their rating in a 9,041–9,063 lb range. Luxury and Luxury+ add larger 22-inch wheels, semi-aniline leather, and additional equipment that increases curb weight and lowers rated tow accordingly.2
Every GX 550 comes standard with Full-Time 4WD and a Torsen® locking center differential — the same drivetrain regardless of trim level. Multi-Terrain Select includes a Deep Snow mode (in H4) and Snow is a Drive Mode option. The Overtrail's one-inch lift and 33-inch all-terrain tires add ground clearance and traction for the worst weeks of an Iowa winter.
All trim levels use a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 producing 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed Direct Shift Automatic Transmission. EPA-estimated highway fuel economy is 21 MPG.
